The Los Cabos frontier could be described as
being opened up in 1975 when the highway was
completed having the road paved completely
from Tijuana to Cabo San Lucas. In these
early days, caravans of motor homes and
travel trailers ventured down the Baja 1216
mile trek from Tijuana. Many of the early
tourists have explained to me the looks on
the locals faces as they rolled through town,
as nobody had seen a motor home nor a travel
trailer up to this point.
Over the past 30 years the area of
Los Cabos has steadily evolved into a thriving
resort area and is beginning to earn world
wide recognition. The deep sea fishing and golfing here are among the
world's best and the weather is unmatchable boasting over 340 days
of sunshine yearly. Up until 1980 there were only a few hotels that
dotted the area known as the Corridor, the 20 miles connecting the
towns of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose Del Cabo. Today there more than
50 hotels between the 2 towns of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose Del Cabo,
and there are plans to build more. This area celebrated the final
completion of the corridor road connecting San Jose del Cabo and
Cabo San Lucas in July of 1993. In November of that same year, a
hurricane hit Los Cabos killing more than 100 and wiping out sections
of the corridor road. It took a few years to rebuild and improvements
have been made to ensure even in such a storm, they could endure another.
Most recently there was such a storm in 2001 and it managed to do some
damage but was held to a minimum based on the prep work that was done
after the 93' storm.
The area of Los Cabos is blessed with miles of sandy beach
and the Sea of Cortez water's never dip below the 70's for water
sports. There is so much to see and do in Los Cabos, a vacation is
simply not adequate and one could take a lifetime simply exploring
the interesting history of pirates and people whom tried to live
here over the years. The unique harsh climate of Los Cabos offers
a diverse range of cactus species as well as other desert fauna.
Today, we are estimated to get 1.5 million tourists annually with
that number projected to grow. Over 70 million U.S. dollars were
spent in preperation for last years A.P.E.C. meeting starting the
first of many phases in a 20 year plan approved for the area.
The communication systems of Los Cabos have constantly improved
over the last 10 years and N.A.F.T.A. has brought a multitude of
products as well as competition. The local municipality of Los Cabos
has taken advantage of growing pains suffered by other resort areas
in Mexico, giving Los Cabos the benefits of a well planned long
term future. Fonatur, the tourist development department of the
Federal Government has worked for the past 25 years completing the
necessary infrastructure to join the 2 resort towns (Cabo San Lucas
and San Jose del Cabos). The end result is taking shape and Los
Cabos promises to be the gem of Mexico for years to come.
An approved plan for the area is projecting the municipality
to be 1,000,000 people within 20 years reflecting substantial
growth from the current 132,000 residents.
In summary, the future is very bright for the municipality of
Los Cabos and having lived here full time since 2001, it is
easy for me to see why the growth is inevitable. I welcome you
do drop me a line and ask me any questions you may have about the
area. I strongly recommend a visit to Los Cabos and let the charm
of the people and the warm climate make you into a full time
resident as well. Please contact me today and start planning your
next vacation now.
